FYI for anyone who has a desire to see a GP30 running on the old N&W main line. The following Roanoke Chapter NRHS equipment is traveling to Appomattox Va, about 72 miles, for exhibition at the "Appomattox Railroad Festival"
ex-N&W GP30 #522
ex-N&W Mail-Storage car 1407 (611's former tool car)
ex-N&W CH class caboose 518409

The equipment will be traveling as a special movement, with an additional NS unit. The GP30 will be under power, and depending on the logistics could possibbly be the lead unit in one direction. (We have equiped it with ditch lights in case). The consist will be operating under a 30 mph speed restriction.
Departure is scheduled for 11:00 am on 10/8 from the old Roanoke coachyard. The return trip will leave Appomattox approximately 5:30 on Sunday. We will be staffing the consist on Saturday and Sunday, 1407 and the caboose will be open to the public with displays inside.

A few photos from the trip down yesterday

I would estimate that we had well over 1000 people tour the equipment today. For most of the day there was a line with a 15-20 minute wait. We had the caboose and tool car open to the public with displays and artifacts in the tool car. We'll be open from 12 to 5 tomorrow. Thank you NS for a great public outreach opportunity.

Darn it, wish I could've seen it all. :( Oh well. So glad to see 522 and the other equipment out and about.

The crowds weren't as large yesterday as on Saturday, but we still had a steady stream of visitors all day long. I would guess that we had around 2000 visitors to the train over the entire weekend. N&WHS has some photos of the event posted on their Facebook page:

Departure last night was after dark, with the equipment returning straight to 9th St. We backed the train in from the NS interchange arriving at our yard limit sign at 1:55 am this morning, thus ending a long weekend that began back in August when the approval for the move was received.
