It appears as tough the UP wood boxcar that I am working on is suffering from an identity crisis. Inside the car it is stencilled as UP 11704 (the photos below show the lettering on one of the doors and on the top sill of the wall just above the door, between the two of the the car is quite clearly identified as UP 11704). As was pointed out in a previous thread, UP 11704 would actually be OWR&N 11704 and would be expected to have OWR&N reporting marks on its exterior. (The different reporting marks on the interior and exterior of the car seem s to be a UP standard, another B-50-2 that I scavenged some parts from had UP inside and OSL on its end) Until today, I have never been able to see a number on the outside of the car. This evening, while applying a coat of primer to the "A" end of the car some lettering became plainly visible through the wet paint... UP 71584. This seems to be older lettering as it was done in the Roman Font that the UP used until the late 1930's. (note that the interior lettering is done in the post 1939 font) So this raises the question; Which car is it?!?!?!? UP 71584 or OWR&N 11704? Or is it both? Could the UP have changed the number, (The Rio Grande liked to change the numbers of cars for accouting or tax purposes, narrow gauge combine 212 and outfit car 04999 (which still exists and is numbered 04988 on an older layer of paint) come to mind, however I have not heard of the UP doing this) or did some car shop guy stencil it wrong when it received the "Route of the Streamliners" lettering in the late 1930's? Alternately, did it need a new end at some point and get one from UP 71584? Any thoughts would be appreciated Thanks Jason Midyette

If the car pre-dates 1915 it may have been renumbered at the time of a general renumbering during the 1915-1918 time period. Steam locomotives were renumbered, passenger cars renumbered and I think freight cars also were renumbered. I seem to recall see old and new numbers listed in the Official Register in that time period. It appears that this was being done to eliminate duplicate number among the various subsidiaries and the parent. |
