Greetings: We are nearly ready to paint one of our former CNJ coaches (CNJ #1139, now VRR# 1001) after a fairly thorough restoration including a new set of windows and a lot of new steel in the window posts and car sides. I am thinking of lettering it CNJ rather than "Connecticut Valley" like the rest of our coaches. I stopped by Steamtown a couple of weeks ago and traced the "Liberty" herald off CNJ #1023 (the last unrepainted CNJ at Steamtown). It measures about 21" wide by 24" high). The woman who does our lettering could work with this but suggested that someone out there might have the herald on disk/digital file that she could use to make a vinyl stencil (trust me, we would hand paint the herald, just use the vinyl as a stencil). If anyone actually has such a disk/file that we could use, please contact me via rypn or 860-767-2021. Thanks! J.David |

I'm wondering if it is possible to simple pick a herald from the internet and "scale it up" to the proper size? |

I've even used a Camp HO decal with a number of enlargements through a copier to get one set of lettering we needed. Had to clean the 'artwork' every few passes to remove the fuzz. There are any number of options to make it. Herb Sakalaucks Colfax Railroaad Museum |

J. David, You probably know this, but the Statue of Liberty varied a little bit, and the print versions of the logo the CNJ used don't always match the ones on the rolling stock. Additionally, there are some model railroad decals out there with an incorrect Lady Liberty on them, an error that has shown up in other places when the decal has been referred to as a source. Hopefully you'll find what you need, but compare it very closely to the one you traced to make sure it is, indeed, the version you need. Nothing about the CNJ is ever easy. :-) Rob |

When I painted "Miss Liberty" on CNJ 113's tender, it was pointed out later that the flames went to the side, which was incorrect. At the time we didn't know there were two versions but as soon as photos were published, those in the know informed us. She has since faded a little and when I repaint her next spring, I will try to correct it somewhat. Bernie |

The http://www.railfonts.com "Railroad Heralds Font" contains a CNJ logo (Shift-K). Not sure if it is the right one, but if it is, purchasing it would give you an instant vector version from which to work from. I am not affiliated with railfonts.com, but I have purchased several of their fonts for use in projects around our Rochester & Genesee Valley Railroad Museum. I do have this font and would be happy to compare it to the one you traced if you could get me a photo of the tracing or possibly a photo you took when tracing it.
