Would anybody have photos, trade literature, advertising, or drawings of McAvity water standpipes, that could be scanned? This is the style used to fill locomotive tenders.

This material is for a proposed project I'm working on.

You might try one of the railroad historical societies historic standard plan books for maintenance of way. I remember browsing in one of the books in a bookstore and saw plans for the installation of one of the styles of stand pipes.

The only McAvity hardware I've run across that I can recall were Canadian versions of hardware provided by other manufacturers in the US - injectors, if memory serves but it has been a long while ago. Perhaps some posters from the Great White North have some information to share.

Absolutely correct. McAvity was a major Canadian foundry from New Brunswick. They eventually became part of Crane, and later Clow Canada.

McAvity produced injectors, valves of all kinds, and water standpipes, mostly for the Canadian railroads. I don't believe they penetrated the American market to any degree, but they were a major supplier north of the border.

As well as railroad products, they made everything from valves to pipe fittings to toilets to fire hydrants- there is hardly a city in Canada that doesn't have a large number of McAvity hydrants still in service.

In spite of the brand's popularity, apparently very little paper documentation has survived in readily accessible sources.

The one place you may find some McAvity literature might be among the steam whistle collectors. Let me know if you're desperate, and I'll hit up an elderly collector of my acquaintance and see if he has anything..........
