A LOT of work is happening in Riverhead right now. I think y'all find it interesting. From RS-3 Work, to the repainting of BEDT 16 with some carpentry work on a new deck there is a lot to do, with something for everyone! Anthony, it's great to see so much forward movement at RMLI. Any chance of the drivers going under the 0-6-0 prior to snow?

What was the reason that the drivers were out?

Hi Rich,

At this point I could not give you a certain answer. We would like to have her on her own feet again, but we are having a problem setting a date with the volunteers that are willing to do it for free. So for now our objective is to cover all the rust to protect her for the winter season, which we have done.

Originally when Engine 16 was moved to the museum over 10 years ago, the company that moved her for us for Brooklyn at least 75 miles away where really tired when they got out to us in Riverhead. It was dark, and they had been working hard all day and they wanted to go home. They were going to come back, but that did not happen. So with the new administration here in Riverhead we are working to correct all the "mess ups" that happened back then. We'll get there.

With all due respect to my Aide de Camp, Anthony, I must clarify his comments on the removal and placement of BEDT 16's drivers at the RMLI.

The locomotive was trucked to Riverhead from Brooklyn on a low-boy flatbed trailer. To keep her profile low enough to navigate the overpasses on the route to Riverhead she was taken from her drivers and cribbed to the low-boy. It was a 24 hour job for our volunteers to get #16 jacked and blocked off her drivers for loading. A three hour transit to Riverhead followed and coordination with two 75 ton cranes to do the lift and get the trailer out from under her.

It was the RMLI volunteers who were exhausted, without sleep, and decided they couldn't place the wheels, side rods and all matter of brake rigging back on the locomotive that day. The contractors and crane operators were pretty fresh, they had gotten a good night's sleep before setting out to Riverhead and the big lift!!

Anthony is correct in saying that they, (the volunteers), had planned on returning to jack #16 up and put the wheels under her on another day. Well, that day is fast approaching, albeit more than ten years from her arrival! :-)
