Stephen,

Incredible image. Love the silhouette of the fireman against the steam, and lighting on the exterior of the lantern showing its detail. Your growing collection of night photos are stunning; thank you for sharing.

I have been to the WW&F quite a few times, will be up there again in mid December for their Victorian Christmas. They put on a show like no other; a photographer’s paradise. Snow. Steam. Bonfires. Santa Claus. Norwegian horse drawn sleigh rides. Hot chocolate. The nicest people.

And it just keeps getting better up there: more track going down all the time, #9 coming back to life, the railcar up and running.

And what Stephen has depicted in this image is how they operate. No radios. Everything is hand signals. They do run at night, and lanterns are used. Old time railroading. Narrow gauge style.

Timeless!

Definitely an O. Winston Link-type quality going on there--back lighting skillfully used, not too much light washing out the scene, etc. I suspect that Link would have wanted the lantern a bit brighter, but......
