Along with "The K-4 Saga", "When Will UP Restore a Big Boy?" and "Can a GG1 Run Again?", the "Tale of Richard Jensen and His Locomotives" is one that has been rehashed ad infinitum here and elsewhere. Do a search for it; plenty to learn about "why". And "who". Draw your own conclusions after reading/researching. And are only "beautiful" locomotives scrapped?? Howard P. Jaded, CT |

Restoring a big boy is not economically feasible, when you say big, you mean it. Stories go when it was firing right, the stoker was on full time and the coal fully burnt before hitting the grate the fire literally lifts off the grates. Steam engine fires can get hot enough to melt metal, but does not because of the water in the boiler. Why you keep your water level up. |

Dave - Just for the record, although Dick Jensen had his hand in saving and/or operating CB&Q 5632, GTW 5629 and CB&Q 4963, he was never involved with the 4960. Les |

Ah yes, one of my first true loves. I managed to get two cab rides. One from St. Joseph, Mo to Cameron Junction, MO and the second from Omaha, NE depot to Gibson yard( a short run). I was heartbroken when I heard it had been destroyed. |

When 5632 was gold. To celebrate the centennial of the opening of its Chicago to Aurora, Illinois line, the Chicago, Burlington, & Quincy very temporarily painted its king of fan trips, Northern 5632, gold. The scene here is a positioning move in Aurora on May 24, 1964. |

The story of Jensen's rescues and mis-happenings with steam are well known, and the essay on Steamlocomotive.com is fairly accurate. Pictures of the GTW Pacific, #5629, being scrapped, do exist. AFAIK, no images of the Burlington 4-8-4, #5632, being scrapped, exist. |
