If nothing more, it raises the presence of the big Hudson to the public's eye. With some luck, somebody will write a check or two, and some little preservation will get done. Getting her under cover would be a good start.

Very interesting. 2-5 million dollars to restore? I'd sooner spend that on something bigger that will attract more people. But like all static displays, it does deserve a sand blasting and paint job, and a shelter to store it under.

In today's world $2.5 million for a restoration of big steam is not much... more like realistic... close to this total has been spend on several notable locomotives... with limited success...

In a sense, for mainline steam, $2.5 million is the new $100,000...

I'm so sorry. The S-4 class is one of my very favorite, even though I live on the left coast near Puget Sound.

Please let me know which parts of a Q S-4 were cast aluminum.

Wow, looking at the pictures it appears much of the jacketing was aluminum. It has turned to dust and fallen away.

Keep in mind that he was talking about an operational restoration; a cosmetic restoration would cost quite a bit less than that unless the locomotive truly was "falling apart", which doesn't seem to be the case here (unless there's hidden damage to the frame, boiler, running gear, or tender, which is quite possible). At least the city had the good sense to remove the asbestos insulation from the boiler, steam appliances, and plumbing not too long after 3006 went on display; that alone has reduced much of the deterioration that far too many "park" locomotives suffer due to moisture being trapped by the insulation. That paint's in decent shape, too, and it looks like the city or some volunteers have done a good job of keeping it that way; still, stripping and repainting would be a good idea, and so too would be some sort of shelter.

Removing the jacket and insulation from the 3006 and needle chipping the boiler and firebox was the first contract job I had working on steam locomotives... 1973 I believe.
