Artrain: Group plans events, looks for additional sponsors
A national art gallery on steel wheels will make its only Oregon appearance, in Hillsboro in late June, pulled into town by a historic 435-ton steam locomotive.
Artrain USA will bring to town an exhibit called "Artistry of Space," featuring work by Andy Warhol, Norman Rockwell, Peter Max and Robert Rauschenberg. The exhibit is NASA's collection and includes 78 pieces from the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C., and the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
Hillsboro will be the only stop between Wishram, Wash., and Sacramento, Calif., on the exhibit's Western tour.
"It feels like a coup," said Barbara Hanson, president of Hillsboro Community Arts and a member of the committee hosting the visit. Hanson heard about the exhibit and lobbied to make Hillsboro a stop.
The committee also hopes to get astronaut Alan Bean, the lunar module pilot of Apollo 12 and the fourth man to walk on the moon, as a keynote speaker and presenter the first weekend of the exhibit. Bean also is an artist who paints space scenes.
June 29 to July 4 The exhibit will arrive on the Portland & Western Railroad tracks on June 28.
