The Superfund website has a number of roundhouses (or roundhouse sites) listed as Superfund cleanup sites. For Montana, they list the Alberton roundhouse site and the Milwaukee roundhouses at Harlowton and Deer Lodge. Does anyone know if these roundhouses actually still exist?

Harlowton still stands in its diesel era configuration. About half the stalls are used for fertilizer storage. At last report, the rest is not being maintained. Harlowton also still has a steel sand tower, a steam era oil tower and some associated outbuildings. The turntable is gone. A large oil skimming setup was put in by the railroad during the 1970's I believe. It is still pulling spilled diesel out of the ground.

A few of the Deer Lodge backshop buildings are still standing, in the use of the Louisiana Pacific saw mill next door.

Next door in Anaconda, the entire BA&P roundhouse and shops complex is still intact and in use. If you ever can get inside the fence, don't miss the opportunity!

Alberton hasn't had a roundhouse since the electrification was built. No doubt diesel spills are the cause of the listing.

The only other roundhouses in Montana are: Whitefish, still used by BNSF; Glendive, part of a shops complex operated by BNSF, and most of the former Milwaukee Road backshops in Miles City, operated by Trinity Industries. A non-working roundhouse is in Lewistown (ex-MILW)used as storage.

I was in Anaconda last year and was fascinated to see what little I could see of the roundhouse and backshop buildings from outside the fence. What RR do they presently belong to, and do you have any idea who one would contact about an inside look see?
