Post subject:  Proposal for Greenville, SC

My wife saw a post on one of her discussion boards about this and of course notified me.

Looks like they're talking about somewhere along Verdae, which pretty much parallels I-85 to the north between Laurens and Woodruff. The old C&WC runs through this area, now out of service from where the branch to GE cuts off it just south of 85 (although they just finished building a NICE new bridge over Woodruff a year or so back). This is very similar to an idea I've thought about myself. I've always thought this section of track would make a good museum ride, maybe with an Edwards car and/or trolleys. With enough interest and $$$$$$$ the line could even be extended back to the Zoo, creating a rail link.

I'm attaching a Google Earth screenshot of the area. The red line is a path I added to show the old C&WC ROW. The ROW is intact up to the point where it comes in alongside 385; the track is intact at least up to the airport but heavily overgrown. The heavy yellow line in the extreme right bottom corner, just below the "le" in "Google," is I-85. There's a cloverleaf interchange for Laurens Road (US 276). Verdae is the first yellow line at the bottom. The zoo is a few blocks out of frame to the upper left; the C&WC ROW is the northern edge of it. Downtown is a dozen or so blocks northwest.

I registered with the proposal site this morning, haven't heard anything back yet of course.
