Two minor errors. The engine is on the R&N at PORT Clinton, not Fort Clinton and the brake SHOES were replaced, not the brake pads. Glad to see the engine returning to it's home turf................well by way of Roanoke anyway. It will be strange not see it at work anymore. |

Continuing the errors: "The two locomotives were among the last commercially built steam engines in America, said Virginia Museum of Transportation Executive Director Bev Fitzpatrick." Except 611 was built in house at the N&W Roanoke shops and not purchased commercially. |

I was in Roanoke yesterday, and, while not having time to go into VMT, I did walk around back got-I think-a glimpse of 614 next to 611. Can anyone confirm that 614 is now there? |

Ross did say that he was hoping 614 was going to to be moved by the 15th. |

Well, that's only one of the issues in question. It would seem like the correct assumption, but why would NS run a Chessie loco? One might think CSX would consider that. Mr. Rowland will let us in when he's ready, but I can't imagine NS doing simply to show its generous nature. We'll get the word concerning the two 4-8-4's when the fruit is ripe. I would dearly, dearly, love to see some of that going toward rehabbing 1218. |

And NS already has a ready to run fallen flag/heritage locomotive that's 2 pony wheels shy of a 4-8-4 should they need it ;) KL |

Well, keep in mind NS (moreso Southern at the time) ran a CP 4-6-4, T&P 2-10-2, and a C&O 2-8-4 for awhile in addition to the 4501, 630, 722, and eventually the N&W 611 and 1218. So it wouldn't be more out of the ordinary seeing 614 haul a future NS trip. |

So it wouldn't be more out of the ordinary seeing 614 haul a future NS trip. Mike - Yes, they ran a C&O Kanawha and changed the looks of the 2-8-4 to a "Southern" engine. Could we expect the 614 to be so changed, even if only temporarily? Hmmmmm, wonder what it would look like with a centered headlight and in Southern type lettering? Ross had the headlight and number plate centered on the smokebox in 1992 to promote his "21st. Century Limited" project and it was on display at the B&O museum for a while that way. IIRC, the C&O Greenbriers came from Lima with the headlight centered, and C&O moved it down. In an article from a mid-80s issue of TRAINS magazine, C&O was snidely given an award by the editors for turning a "silk purse into a sow's ear." |

Also, dont forget the SP 4449 that operated briefly with the Southern.......and the NKP 587 and the L&N 152....... |
