Alcos in Distress !!!

Reports are the Alexander RR has acquired two SW1500's (not yet on the
property). This will likely doom their two S-3s, which do not have roller bearings.
One unit is rumored to be ex-PRR.

It's been a while since this report. Any updated news on the status of the Alco switchers at the Alexander Railroad?

In October one of the Alcos was at the lumberyard in Statesville, NC, where the Statesville switcher (normally ARC's GE 44-tonner) is kept. The GE may have been having mechanical problems, or perhaps they needed bigger power in Statesville.

Rest assure, the Alcos at the Alexander Railroad are fine.

While the arrival of the SW1500's will spell eventually be the end of the Alcos, there are NO immediate plans to get rid of them, and when they do, plans are in place to make sure they will be preserved. I don't speak for the railroad, but I do count the president, GFE, and most of the BOD among my friends.

Alco Number Six has been stored in Statesville recently because 44-tonner Number Three (usually stationed there) has been in the shop for some fairly hefty repairs.

Alco Number Seven hasn't been in the rotation quite as much lately as SW-900 #8 and the two new SW-1500's have been handling most of the load. Still, she could go in and pull a freight at a moment's notice.

While plans could change at anytime in the best interest of its stockholders, the current plans would be for #7 to go to a Pennsy-themed collection and #6 could likely go to the Alexander Chapter-NRHS...

Number 3, the 44-tonner, will likely stick around for the future, as of course will the SW1500's 9 and 10.

Personally, I'm more concerned with what will happen to #8, the SW9.

So I suppose there's no chance, at present, that one of the Alcos could go to NCTM in Spencer...bummer.

SW9 #8 is ex-Union RR #707.

She's been on the property since 1990.

Hard to believe it has been 20 years....seems like yesterday she arrived and promptly broke an axle.
