The Steam parade will again be a GO for April 30 2011. Of course there are preliminary festivities leading up to it.

The Wolsztyn Experience is undergoing some changes. A new non profit organization called "Railways of Wolsztyn" (English translation) has been formed They will own the steam engines and the engine house. Crews work for them and are paid by them, but licensed under PKP. This arrangement should provide long term stability to the Worlstyn steam operations. They are sending boilers to the Czech Republic for overhaul.

In spring - summer 2011 major track work on the standard Posnan line will mean significant changes for the utilization of steam engines. The best part of this means that some of the run will now be done on the 80 mph Berlin-Posnan line. Imagine being at the throttle of a steam engine pushing 70-80 mph in daily commuter service. Anybody can do this!!!!

I can't help but think that 25 years ago in America I could pretty much go anywhere in America and photograph trains and even get invited into the cab for a ride. 25 years ago in Poland..... good chance of being hauled in and questioned and ...... Now today in Poland, they let us drive them, and go ahead and take all the pictures you want. Just don't get hurt. Today in America.............

Twenty years ago, in 1991, I was in Wolstzyn and photographed the locos both in the roundhouse and on the road, in service. No problems taking photos, either.

And to boot, could you have had 16 standard gauge--heck, any gauge--steam engines out of a roundhouse in America 25 years ago? In regular, secondary Class 1 service? In secondary and commuter passenger service? With all the access and friendly atmosphere you describe? With the added esthetics of of knuckle couplers, pilots, bells and chime whistles blowing 14-L for crossings?

I live in the wrong time, and not just because of this. . .and it leaves one feeling mighty blue. . .

Is it just me or are we in the only era where one would consider having 16 steam locomotive coupled together in one consist? Certainly it is not easily attainable but when steam was plentiful nobody considered doing it.

The Southern Pacific did it once with 20 of their new 2-10-2s, in what became known as the Prosperity Special:

Some hospital trains or trains of locomotives heading for scrap may also contain several locomotives.
