Why is it being scrapped? It looks like it's on roller bearings, and I don't recall seeing it for sale anywhere. CD |

More practically: Where? How Much? Who to contact. Odds are a motivated party can give a better price for the car than the scrapper. They key (annoyingly) is motivated and cash in hand. A sizable deposit my hold it. DETAILS! Michael Seitz Missoula MT |

I've forwarded the post to someone who might be interested. This is too good to go. If she's in operable shape, shes a great car to haul behind vintage locomotives. |

A beautiful, classic car indeed -- solid, at least on the side we can see, and nice cast one piece trucks. As much as it grieves me to say it N&W had some rock solid passenger equipment over the years and it would be a shame to see this one go. I'll go way out to the end of the limb here and say that I bet the problem is those horrible, unsafe, obsolete, antiquated, and downright dangerous non rotating end roller bearings. You know, the ones that are going to slip in and kill us when we're sleeping tonight. Some roads can't figure out how to safely move these safely. Then again, I've seen some people grease a Timken with everything and anything except the AAR roller bearing grease that you're supposed to use..... |

I didn't see a number mentioned for this car. I wondered if it was an original N&W car, or maybe from one of the roads that was acquired (Wabash, NKP, VGN, etc.) Thanks. Les |

The car is an N&W MS class mail-storage car, built by BSC 12-27 or 1-28. N&W had 25 of these, 1400-1424. They are solid, well built cars, and were well maintained right up to 1971. Normally, we we be all over this, but we allready have one, the 1407, and VMT has one also. That makes the aquisition hard to justify in light of our other projects. The Portsmouth Museum has 2, and I believe there are a couple more floating around also. As for the oil rollers, I understand that the car is located off NS trackage. They don't seem to have a problem with them yet, only CSX. |

Gary, Were the baggage doors on the 1407 replaced at sometime during its original service life on the N&W? Comparing the photo of the baggage car in Pittsburgh to my memories of seeing the 1407 in use behind 611 and 1218, I recall the 1407's baggage doors only having a single window rather than three small windows like the car in Pittsburgh. Otherwise, I can see the similarities although the baggage in Pittsburgh is still in the Pevlar blue paint scheme, albeit extremely faded and covered with graffiti. Steven Ashley |

Steven, Some of the cars got new doors, others retained the wooden ones. VMT's car has metal doors like the 1407. It was stored behind East End Shops after 1971 until it's donation to VMT in the 1980's. |

You wouldn't be referring to those very same Hyatt roller bearings that the certain unamed railroad uses under their very own locomotives??? The ones where the 5 1/2 by 10 and 6 by 11's are EXACTLY the same design as the locomotive 6 1/2 by 12's that they are still using under their switchers???? |

I thought the building signage looked familiar, so I played a hunch and found the car in question at the Ambridge Regional Center. http://www.bing.com/maps/?v=2&cp=qs14nn ... ge%2C%20PA |

I think this is one of a group of cars that was advertised for sale in Railswap in the last month or two. |

Wow! As far as baggage cars go, this one looks great and it's on rollers and apparently connected to NS who will move it with current lube and COT&S dates (and AEI tags). Wonder what the inside looks like? Surely someone could step up to save this one. Hoping for the best, Mike |
