I’m ready to paint some new windows for the IRMs ATSF 1400 caboose. We thought they would be the mineral brown/boxcar red color as the rest of the car but found this online.

Anyone out there know of a paint diagram that shows green as a window color for the 1400 series cars? There was some dark green on some interior walls.

Buzz,

I re-posted your question on the Steam Era Freightcar Yahoo list, and Andy Sperandeo replied that he had contacted you through the Santa Fe Modeler's list that the sash were body color. I'll add that several other Santa Fe experts concur, saying the entire car, underbody, and trucks were mineral brown, except some cars had black roofs.

The inside color of the sash should be the same as the interior of the car. That would most likely be the dark green you reported.

I bet that the car in the photo had been fixed up -- maybe with replacement sash -- and whoever did the sash painted both sides the same color.

Good inquiry! Best always to do the best original research you can and not to automatically rely one someone else.

Yes have looked at the info on the SantaFeRR group and am coming to the conclusion the exterior should all be brown. Also going out to the Strahorn Library to look at what was published. Research can be as interesting as the work sometimes. Thanks to all for the help.
