Actually that's an FA-2. There is also an FPA-4 at the DL shop. the two of them back to back in GVT corporate paint. Imagine that!

Were they able to get the B unit moved too or is that still waiting on wheel replacement? If that's the case I guess it will have to wait until spring.....if we ever have one of those again!

Good to see some progress with thier stuff. Looks like the DL's shop force's work just keeps piling up ;)

Is this the only surviving New York Central ALCO FA?

It's not a NYC engine, it was only done that way for some event, arjay (sp?) had the info on that when I asked several weeks ago. I believe it was L&N originally.

The FA2 is ex-L&N/LIRR. I believe ARHS intended to paint it in LV colors. NYC 1102 is the last surviving NYC FA, and it's in the care of the Western New York Railway Historical Society.

The F"3"B was moved to Scranton with the two Alcos and will be repainted to match the "Lackawanna" A units. Finally, Rich Jahn can sleep at night.

FPA-4 ex-via 6763 - was on the Naugy for a time, it was owned and may still be by Ed Bowers, i did some paint removal in the cab back in the late 90's, as the naugy was looking at the possibility of getting her up and running, that did not materialize as that would also mean running 2 units for a one unit job,, it was also rummored at that time that the FPA4 and FPB4 (or 2) that is in danbury was actually to be moved to naugy as part of a trade for the E9 that danbury has in NYC livery "which i still believe Ed Bowers still owns" ,as it was deemed suprlus and not really fitting the RMNE's Collection at that time we needed a couple good runners for weekend service more than we needed a E9 shell

the short of it was the units were not properly buttoned up for storage and there would need to be signifigant work done to even get one runner, I do not know the details of the deal between ed or the rmne, nor do i want to, but what i do know is the 6763 quietly left for rustier rail somewhere else

Nice to see a former L&N unit (The NYC-painted Alco FA-2) in good hands.

Those Alco cab united lasted a long time on the L&N, into the mid to late 1960s as they had cab signaling equipment, then used on parts of the L&N's Cincinnati to Knoxville main line. It's funny to see photos of battered and beaten Alco FA-2s leading a 3 unit set of brand new L&N GP-30s on hot auto parts trains. Though, the L&N wanted to discontinue ATC/ATS on its system, and didn't want to invest in the equipment for new locomotives.

Of course, turning these ex LIRR "Power Packs" into locomotives again is a complicated job, just ask RYPN poster "NH0401" who was involved in a similar project for RMNE. It's not as simple as putting traction motors back in and hitting the start button!

There is in fact a FA-2 that was NYC 1102. It was former LIRR 600. This ALCO is owned by the WNYRHS in Buffalo, NY.

To add to Mr. Wilkins' comment, there is a similar project in NJ. It is indeed more than a simple matter of adding traction motors and hitting the start button. Replacing seemingly miles of rotten wire with Exane, rebuilding static control panels, installing new high voltage cables, rebuilding contactors and re-installing reversers, installing a new air brake system, installing AAR standard MU fore and aft, building upgraded engine alarm systems, updating transition control, etc.; all of this has to be done. The results should be well worth the effort, though.

The FA in the photos above has been moved from storage on the Southern Railroad of New Jersey to the D-L shops in Scranton. It could be the "project in NJ" engine that you're thinking of.

CPR 4000, no, it's not the same locomotive. The Jersey project is considerably larger, involving the complete restoration of two FA2's and eventually, a pair of FA1's. There is at least one VIA FA4 on the property, and other parts have come from Erie Mining ALCO RS11's. This effort has been severely hampered by copper thieves and vandals, but plugs along. Kudos to the owner and his staff.

Yes the EMD B unit is safely put away in the Steamtown yard.
The two Alco's are down by the D-L shop.
All are waiting for the weather to break. There is a lot of work to do and for anyone curious the B unit will NOT be painted this year. A lot of money was already spent for the move and there is much interior work to do. (cleaning, rust removal, electrical wiring, etc.)
