Anyone know if this engine is considered safe from scrapping or if any organizations have considered acquiring it? It would seem to be a natural fit restored as Southern 1436 at TVRM ,Spencer Shops or just anywhere that it could be appreciated,it looks to be in good shape on steamlocomotive.com. |

Johnny - It is my understanding that the family that owns the 0-6-0 has never entertained any thoughts of donating it, or selling it. It remains stored inside the old M&NF enginehouse. Yes, she appears to be in good shape and I think that she would be a welcome addition at any museum. I know we'd love to have her at Hoosier Valley. I am a bit curious as to where your number 1436 came from. I believe that she was built for the Southern as #1643 and carried that number until she was sold to the M&NF and renumbered as their number 12. Les |

The engine is NOT for sale. The current owner has a family attachment to the property and the engine in particular. If I remember my conversation with him he refered to it as "grandpa's engine" so that gives you an idea of where he sits. They've turned down cash on the spot offers as high as $50,000 dollars before. They also don't want to sell the property becuase of some plan to turn the property into a museum "once the Highway 66 project is completed". Glad to see the girl made it safe and sound. Now, about those flat cars--one of which is a heavy-duty job of 100-ton nominal capacity. This car seems to have been in preservation for a while (there are photos of it at Strasburg between 2007 and 2010). http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/rsPict ... ?id=251159 I wonder what sort of work Mr. Jacobson has in mind for it. . .I wonder if he might be able to make use of more than one. . .:-) |

Could somebody fill in the unenlightened among us? We have several posts saying "this engine is not for sale or donation- ever" and then a link showing photos of the engine being moved to the Age of Steam Roundhouse. Did I miss something? |

So this is the same engine that was not for sale at any price? I guess Mr. Jacobson made the right offer. |

Well, we don't know. Enough money, maybe the "right" buyer that would care for her better than Joe Schmoe down the street, maybe it was donated to him, maybe it was indeed a lot of money, or it could even be that he's just storing it for them as a lease/purchase agreement.... Who knows? It's not our business until he invites us to the museum or steam-up. This is, indeed, why any time someone makes pronouncements such as "not for sale at ANY price", it should be taken as worthless. Even if those words come from the locomotive's owner (or, as occasionally happens, "alleged owner").... Even when "case history" backs up such assumptions (the Baldwin Sharks and more at the Escanaba & Lake Superior, the East Broad Top, etc.), nothing like this is ever permanent. It can take only minor things--a major medical crisis, a change of philosophy, a winning lottery ticket, a big tax bill from an inheritance, etc.--to inflict major changes of heart. |

Note that the "Not for sale, EVER" posting was almost exactly one year ago. My how things change in a year! Glad to see that this "Barn Find" has gone to a good home! |

Sad to note in one picture that it mentions that some brass parts were stolen while it waited outside for shipment to the Age of Steam facility. It's almost like the crackheads have a tracking system on every known steam locomotive and as soon as they are susceptible, they pounce on them. As a railroad historian and someone who has spent countless hours working on #12, I am glad to see her safe and sound in Ohio in the new roundhouse. Jerry told me that she will be restored to operating condition in the next few years. Some of the brass that came up missing were the boiler wash out plugs and I was told that they would most likely have been replaced anyway. The tender is in such bad shape because the railroad left it half full of coal when they finished using it in 1963. All those years of storage in the concrete engine house until 1991 caused most of the damage. This is because the roof leaked so badly. We cleaned her out when we moved her to the engine house in 1991 but the damage was already done. When they lifted the tender off her trucks, the front truck under the coal bunker was almost rusted solid to it. I look forward to seeing the engine in full operation in the near future. As far as any steam locomotive left in Clearfield, KY, I know of one more with Morehead and North Fork heritage. It is a little smaller in that is is 1/8" scale (M&NF #9 ) but most of it was built in the same engine house that #12 was just removed from. Hopefully it will be under steam in the near future too.
