Boredom is something that comes around with anything. What makes an event interesting is the content of the gathering, so this meeting could prove to be very interesting.

Just back on Monday, one of the officers of our NRHS Chapter showed a slide show of various conventions of the Southern Railway Historical Society, with visits to such places as NCTM Spencer, TVRM Chattanooga, Atlanta, Savannah, Charleston, Memphis, and the like. It was amazing the diversity of visits that were shown there--everything from functioning NS yards and shops to museums to steam shops to restored vintage buildings to boat rides through former SR dock terminals. They even paid a visit to Norfolk Southern's "private" resort/nature preserve, Brosnan Forest.

It's all in what you make of it. And it's a far smarter strategy than always holding your gathering in the same place, to the benefit of a few and the detriment of those scattered afield.

NS has a private nature preserve? Guess you never stop learning.

It's a long story.

Short version: 12,000 acres set aside for preservation in the South Carolina "lowcountry" near Dorchester; a portion is set up as a hunting, fishing, golfing, etc. resort and "corporate retreat" for NS employees and their families and guests. NS deeded the easement to the Lowcountry Open Land Trust in 2008 to help preserve a buffer zone for environmentally sensitive land (hey, is that "preservation"? See, we're on topic!)
