Read about a recent Rypn'er's engagement at the Smithsonian on SI's daily blog ... not to fear, Southern Ry No. 1401 was not far away:

To borrow from another part of TV and movie fandom,
Live Long and Prosper!

I didn't propose to my wife in quite such an iconic location, but we "tied the knot" aboard a Pacific Electric interurban car at Orange Empire Ry. Museum.

And on our virtual record player, Love Train, by the O'Jays.

Great story, and also really cool to put a face to the name I've known here for so long.

Congrats indeed! Our wedding had this common theme-first operating steam locomotive my wife ever saw was N&W 611...we ended up getting married on 6-11.

Congratulations Kurt and Michelle! Very cool Kurt. That proposal will be a fun story to tell as time goes on. Can't wait to read the Smithsonian collection book, still waiting for the Strasburg book! See you at the RR.

Kurt -

Congrats to you and Michelle. I didn't have such a dramatic place for my proposal to my wife, but I DID meet her on a Rock Island 2500 class commuter car running out of Chicago's LaSalle Street Station. So also a bit of a rail connection.

I proposed on the front porch of my wife's family home in Enola, Pa., directly across Route 11-15 from the enginehouse and turntable in the PRR's Enola Yard. Our honeymoon was spent at Watoga State Park in West Virginia, only a few miles from Cass, which we visited several times. Last summer, we returned to Cass and Watoga to celebrate our 40th anniversary. There has been a lot of miles and a lot of steam for us over the years. Congratulations, Kurt and Michelle.

Wait, that was a year ago. Where has he been since....never mind!?!

I was married in a church, but the reception was aboard a chartered "Freer Flyer" at TVRM. Honeymoon trip to Grand Canyon, Durango, Chama, Santa Fe, etc. Just a coincidence that all those places have recreational railroads, I'm sure.

Congrats Kurt! Great story to share and yes that does explain why we haven't seen you on here much the last few years. :)

Congratulations, Kurt!

My wife Amy has dual railroad background. Her paternal grandfather was a machinist for the PRR in Altoona, and her maternal grandfather was a passenger conductor for the N&W out of Roanoke. She also likes going to railroad museums with me!

Best wishes,
