It was just about 60 years ago that the Pacific Electric 1100-class cars (which I rode as a boy) were shipped to Buenos Aires to run for many years on the Ferrocarril General Urquiza. They had been built in 1925 for service on the Northern District (Pasadena, Monrovia, etc.) and thus had about 26 years on the PE. The 1100's were retired some time in the 1960's or 70's; according to one story, some of them were sold to Paraguay, where they ran as unpowered coaches behind steam locomotives. I have seen photos of the rusty hulks of one or two of the ex-PE cars somewhere in South America, but, much as I would like to see an 1100 again, it would probably be easier to build a replica from scratch than to "repatriate" what's left down there. The Red Cars of San Diego went into service in July 1981, giving them more time in service than the PE cars. (although the car in the photo, 1070, is from a somewhat newer group). |
