All,

I am working my way through the last 10 years' worth of Britain's Steam Railway magazine recently given to me by a friend. Of interest, was a blub about Italy's National Railroad Museum. Here are a couple of links of photos:

I like how the steam locomotives are displayed in the erecting shop, complete with transfer table. Certainly looks like it would be worth a visit, if one is in the Naples area.

Wish I would have known about this place in the 70's!! I was in Naples several times from 76-80 while in the Navy.

If you know where to look, Italy has a lot of preserved rail to offer. They have a quality railfan magazine called "Tutto Treno" (http://www.duegieditrice.it/tutto-treno-sommario/)

The Milan science museum ("Leonardo da Vinci") also has a large shed full of locomotives. The main building has a complete sailing ship INSIDE, which still boggles me. If you know, Milan is not a seaport, and the city center is a typical old, dense urban area. I still can not imagine how they moved the ship into the museum. They also have the middle slice of a small ocean liner inside the museum.

Thanks for the information. I will be in Naples at the end of May and will try to visit.

FYI an Italian museum directory I found lists the open days as Monday through Saturday.

The proper name is Museo Nazionale Ferroviario di Pietrarsa
