Anyone know what became of Delaware Otsego's ex-CNJ steel combine car? It was used on their excursion train out of Cooperstown, NY until the 1970s. Any information is welcome. Thank you. |

The Delaware Otsego donated a former CNJ combine to the Susquehanna Valley Chapter-NRHS in Binghamton, NY in 1987 or 1988. I'm pretty certain that this is the car in question. The car was to be used as part of a rail museum at the Binghamton DL&W station, but construction of a baseball stadium next to the site severed the tracks and the project was dropped. The CNJ combine and an Erie Stillwell coupled to it were scrapped in 1995 after vandals torched the Stillwell. A second Stillwell survived and was sold to the Chemung Valley RHS in 1998. It will become part of the Chemung Valley Railway museum later this year. Photos of the Stillwell can be seen at chemungvalleyrhs.com. I have a photo of the combine taken in 1992 somewhere. Harold, That car was indeed lost, primarily from the vandalism. Its been a decade+ since I worked on it, but when we got it, it had ben hit hard enough to buckle one end and the brakes had been cannibalized. We had new windows made, but were unable to get the car total secured because of the buckled floor and dimishing security around the site. All roads are paved w/ good intentions. Sorry.
