Can anyone point me in the direction of some good shots of the Lima A-1 2-8-4 Berkshire before she was sold to the ICRR?

Sincerely,

Rob Gardner

They have the negative collection from the LLW. LLW A-1 was order #1070. Also, there were many articles with photos in Railway Age.

Why does everyone call this loco "A-1" as if that were its road number?

Photos clearly show it as number 1, and Lima called it "Class A."

Could it be that so many railfan sources have perpetuated the "A-1" error that it has become fact?

Maybe it was the steak sauce they named after it.

On pg 137 of Eric Hirsimaki's book Lima, there are three photos of #1, one lettered for B&A and the other for Lima Locomotive Works. They aren't the clearest photos, but on each one, the cab is lettered 1, under that A-1, and under that an indistinct single character. I don't believe A-1 is a railfan designation, seems LLW used it first.

I didn't say that "A-1" was a railfan invention, only that calling the loco that as if that were its road number seems to have only appeared in railfan press sources.

Since in the USA we just refer to a loco by its number, without the class prefix often used elsewhere, this fine Class A-1 loco number 1 should properly be referred to by that marvelous single digit.

End of subject, SFAIC.
