Who currently owns the RS-1 still lettered for Indiana Hi Rail as 167?
I know it was sold and presumably preserved.

The Alco is privately owned and has been renumbered back to 467, although it still retains its old, faded, Indiana Hi-Rail paint job. It currently sits just outside the Shop at the Hoosier Valley Railroad Museum in North Judson, Indiana.

John -

The owner is a Long Island Rail Road fan and yes, I understand he intends to eventually restore the RS-1 into one of the Long Island paint schemes. As to which scheme, I do not know.

What would the RS1's been have delivered to the LIRR as? I know the LI had a gray with orange trim scheme and then later a blue with white stripes in a "wave" on thier locos, I don't know if the RS1's would have worn this later scheme though.

The early RS-1's wore asolid Gray with white lettering. Later they wore gray with orange ends. In 1964, they wore gray with orange stripe to match coaches with the same scheme.
Towards the end, I have seen them with blue and yellow and then blue with "surf"stripes.

The LIRR RS1's were delivered in black with Pennsy style gold lettering. Around 1950, they switched to the Tichy style, which was a light, bluish gray, with red pilot, a blue Long Island map under the cab, and white trim. The radiators had huge numerals in sheet metal. Around 1955, with the arrival of the last Diesel infusion, all LIRR Diesel locomotives dropped the Tichy scheme in favor of dark gray with orange ends. There was a final "World's Fair wave" applied in 1964-5. Once the LIRR was sold out to the MTA, all locomotives went to blue and yellow, then to a blue-white wave.

Dick -

First of all, I think that the RS-1's were delivered in Brunswick Green (not black) paint. Yes, I know it is hard to tell that it ISN'T black. The owner has a painting of his RS-1 showing the 467 in the Tichy style paint scheme with the large engine numbers on the radiators and the light blue Long Island map under the cab window. Seeing this painting makes me think that that is the scheme he favors, but of course, I don't know for sure. Time will tell I guess.

Les: Being a LIRR hound of pedigree, I can assure you, they did not arrive in Brunswick green. They just didn't. LIRR also painted its steam locomotives in black, not Brunswick green.
The scheme the gentleman is favoring is the Tichy scheme. This was the prettiest, yet most complex and expensive scheme used by LIRR Diesels. Sadly, it didn't last. 467 was painted up in that scheme at one time, in her career. Steve Lynch's LIRR site has abundant pictures of a variety of FM's and early ALCO's in Tichy.

If you had a Long Island RS-1, how would you paint it?

Some may say that it should be in t5he as delivered paint. Others may say, the scheme that looked the best.
Keep in mind that everything painted in the 1940's could be had in any paint color you wanted as long as it was black!

Does anyone know what scheme the OWNER plans to paint it in?

It will be Tichy, but it will be sometime before it gets restored.

First of all, thanks to all for the interest in the 467.

As the owner, I can tell you that Les and Jason are correct, the plan is to restore the 467 to as-delivered appearance starting this summer/fall some time.

The first group of RS1s delivered (1949) in black/brunswick/whatever, lettered like PRR practice of the day. The second group delivered (1950) wore the Lester Tichy scheme.

We will remove the ASC boxes and associated spaghetti maze of piping, re-open the upper carbody windows, and probably for the time being, leave her as friction bearing.

Darn it trainspot you beat me to it. That is a 1950 ALCO builder's photo. It sure looks nice and GREY to me.
For those interested in Long Island ALCO's there is a S-1 located in Upper Sandusky, Ohio at the grain elevator. I have looked at those paint layers very carefully, and I would say at some point in its life it was painted Brunswick green. More food for debate.

I will have to add that builders photo to the articles I am doing for ALCO NOTES. The article will cover the ALCO's that survive after the Long Island sold them.
