http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SyLwt_GFpcQ Apparently only 2-3 cars actually derailed on a crossing, a minor derailment by all standards (the kind we used to see all the time on locals in old Penn Central days). I love the way one idiot (apparently according to the comments, the videographer himself) just walks right in front of the stopped train--supposedly to "get the perfect shot," but you see no obvious photo-taking going on...... Anyone from Hoosier Valley Ry. Museum want to fill in details? |

Well, it was at a grade crossing. Maybe the coaches caught something in the crossing that caused the derailment? |

That's such a non-event in the world of derailments. Sorry HVRM had to deal with the headache, however. Mike Goody's, Indiana |

Official statement from HVRM. On the first trip of the day on Sunday 5-29-11, 5 cars derailed at the Indiana Highway 8 grade crossing in LaCrosse, IN. There were 2 very minor injuries, and no damage to the equipment. The cause of the derailment is under investigation. The NRC, FRA, and insurance carries were all notified. All cars were re-railed and back in North Judson by 7:00 pm central time. 3 of the 5 cars were taken out of service until a detailed inspection can be performed. The other 2 cars were thoroughly inspected by a qualified car inspector, and returned to service on Monday 5-30-11. Normal train operations resumed on Monday the 30th, but ran as far west as county road 875. The track around the derailment was taken out of service till a detailed inspection can be made. it happens...even on the best of lines. It reminds me of the dragging equipment on the South Shore on a UP train not too long ago, tore up miles of track, big massive repair effort brought the line back in operation in one day, I was impressed. |
