Railway cable theft up 70% as overall crime falls

Cable thefts from Britain's railways has increased by more than two-thirds, according to British Transport Police (BTP).

BTP said cable thefts were up 70% but overall crime fell by 2.9% in 2010/11, the seventh successive annual decrease.

The force said the crime caused significant disruption to rail services and incurred huge financial costs on the rail industry.

BTP said it had increased resources to tackle the thefts.

There were 2,712 cable thefts in 2010/11 compared with 1,593 in the previous 12 months, it said.

Back in March, we were running our tractor with wagon down the trail for a Pinelands tour of our historic sites and I noticed a joint bar laying beside the trail. I made a mental note to come back and pick it up. Then a few yards later I saw about a dozen or so laying neatly in a row next to the trail. I called for two volunteers from the station to come down the trail to retrieve them. Upon my return to the area where we have the bars, spikes and tie plates, I noticed the bar pile was smaller than it was. Last year I sprayed some green paint across the top of the pile to indicate if something was moved. So we spent the next four weeks fencing in an area beside the section house to store any "walkables" that had scrap value. You have no idea how much fun it is to put up a couple of hundred feet of chain link fence! The only thing left out there for them to grab is the rail and that is too inconvenient for them to grab!

Later!
Mr. Ed
