I am delighted to see this locomotive safe and preserved, and cherished by a responsible group. When Ron Ziel purchased it, he did so with an auto-loan! Making out the forms, such as manufacture and weight tipped the bank officer that something wasn't right. His response was to switch it to a personal loan! Ron intended to run the little loco on as proposed tourist line on eastern Long Island, to be called "The Sag Harbor and Scuttle Hole Railroad". This was to be built upon the old LIRR roadbed that remained from a branch line torn up in the 30's. Sadly, it never came to pass, though Ziel and his then business partner George Foster, put tons of effort into making it so.
There were a casulties from the BEDT fleet of steam locos, but I believe most were saved and several have been operated. Foster's #16 has wound up in the Railroad Museum of Long Island, while another ran on the Black River and Western. Check Ziel's pioneering book, "The Twilight of Steam Locomotives" for some great photos of the little tank engines in service against New York's skyline.

In glancing back through Ron Ziel's book while looking for the the little locomotive, I was struck by the picture of the fireman on Page 18, titled "Fireman's Check". Is this the notorious 'Black Bart' of the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic RR? As the book was copyrighted in 1963, I was just wondering if Mr. Bartholomew ever worked at Keene, NH as a fireman back then.

We're looking for photos of this engine in operation either as BEDT 12 or earlier at the Brookly Navy Yard. If anyone has these. we'd like to either buy or get good scans for the museum.
