Up until a few years ago Morton was still selling the traditional step box. There was also a company (in Kansas I think) that was making them as well as the Amtrak style. Does anyone know who sells new step boxes? |

Several different companies make steps for industrial use that make perfect step boxes. They are not authentic but they are unlikely to be liberated by rail fans. |

As far as I know, you can still get the traditional style from Morton. They are made to order, though they may have a few in stock at any one time. As I recall, they were around $275.00 ea. A few years ago I asked if they could emboss a new one with a RR logo or RR name like they did circa 1950's and they said no. For years they have also had new rubber feet available for their old stepboxes. Have you contacted them recently? That would be a shame if they don't make the stepboxes anymore. |

No, I called Morton last week and they told me they will no longer make them, even on a custom basis. |

A run of 6 replica wooden step boxes were manufactured this past year by a father-son team at IRM. Apparently they are in the second production run of 6 at this time. http://www2.irm.org/blogs/archives/770-Wood-Shop-Update-October-3,-2010.html |

I too looked at the replica steps at the IRM. If you check out the high rez blog photos you can see they look very close to the real thing. They used high quality void free Baltic Birch plywood with a thick brush on primer, then sanded and sprayed. The wood may wear faster than aluminum but you can also glue on a rubber mat. |

Those amazing replica steps have "ShopBot" written all over them. You could also have the ShopBot route in your railroad's name and logo. |
