Go to this website about Camp Atterbury, IN, during WWII, http://www.indianamilitary.org/Camp%20A ... lroads.htm scroll most of the way down, and you'll come to a picture of a Baldwin with a caption that reads: "A new Baldwin 120 ton Diesel engine was recently delivered to the Post Transportation Branch here. The 1,000 hp giant is capable of pulling 70 box cars or an 18-car Pullman train and can attain a speed of 45 mph." Does anyone have any idea what its number was? I've already asked the webmaster and he doesn't have the answer. |

Assuming that the locomotive is as pictured and described, it's a Baldwin VO-1000. The Army only had 26 of these, and their data can be found here: http://thedieselshop.us/BLW_VO1000.HTML And this list seems to imply that this specific loco, whatever it was, is long gone, as no Army VO-1000's survived: http://thedieselshop.us/PRSVDbaldwin.HTML |

I don't have the ID of the particular VO-1000 in question, but I do see some bad info in that referenced list of BLW VO-1000 locos. BLW c/n 62000's original road number was, surprise, 62000. After some duty as a BLW demo it briefly served ATSF as 2200 1st. It was soon returned to BLW where it became an Eddystone plant switcher. The other ATSF 2200 2nd, was not a VO. Nor was 62000 rated at 1000 HP, but more like 900 HP. I believe the statement that no Army VO-1000 survived is incorrect. As I recall 7467, after also serving the USAF, survives at one of the southeastern museums, albeit in some other lettering and paint. Perhaps someone more familiar with the unit's current status could fill in the details. |

Well, it was the "War Department," after all. [/quote] Well the transfer from Army to Air Force is easy to explain since until 1947 the "Air Force" was part of the Army. The Air force as we know it today was created in September 1947, and lots of Army equipment including railroad locomotives became Air Force essentially overnight. Greg |
