I have to ID the types of draft gear under some of our freight cars for a 50 year wavier. Are there markings or some reference that I can use to do this?

Jason:

The best you'll be able to do is look for cast-in-place numbers and manufacturers' markings.

Take some pictures as well to document what you are looking at. We made up a spreadsheet that included, among other things: type of couplers; draft gear; wheelset type and year; underframe; brake system; truck type; etc. It was a handy attachment to include with the waiver filing.
