Post subject:  Alishan Forest Railway and Shays

Came across this while looking for something else--the now-preserved Alishan Forest Railway of Taiwan, and its narrow-gauge Shays, on a site from Australia. Talk about international connections!

Most notable photograph--the dead line of rusty Shays, perhaps waiting their turn someday. Darn if it doesn't remind me of the dead line at Cass!

Also notable, the trucks are "backwards" to what we would normally see on a Shay here, in that the bevel gears are behind the axles instead of ahead of them. This also means the engines and shafts on the sides run in the opposite direction from a "normal" Shay for whichever direction the locomotive is operating in. This wouldn't affect normal overall operation, but it is different from what we normally see.

J3a- you've always had international connections............!! There is one of these shays preserved here in Australia at the Puffing Billy Railway's museum at Menzies Creek in Victoria. It is under cover and in fairly good external condition.
