The 1891 locomotive referred to sounds like the Porter 0-4-0 that now resides in Fillmore CA. I first saw it in the 1960's, when Stan Garner and the late Bill Oden kept it on an isolated stretch of track in what is now Rancho Cucamonga CA. One day when I was out with the family, I went by the location, planning to show my daughters, who were about 6 and 7 years old at the time, "Stan's engine" (Stan and I worked at the same company in those far off days.) Not only did the girls see the engine, they got to ride it, and even chuck wood into the firebox. I used to kid Stan about the fact that this was probably the only steam engine that outlived the trolley car that replaced it. |
