I was stationed in Thailand back in 1969. We were on the way to the base early one morning. The whistle from a steamer made me jump out of my seat. It had been a long time since I heard a steam engine. Since about 1954 on the PRR. I sure miss those days.

There are nearly 80 steam locomotives in Thailand still; four were operational at least until recently.

The last one was imported from Japan new in 1959; but never used. It was found in a shed, and is now owned by Thai Railfans Club Museum, Chatuchak Park, Bangkok.

Steam excursions are run for the King's birthday. I believe that's the only time. A German tour operator recently attempted to charter the operational locomotives for a tour, but was rebuffed.

The State Railway of Thailand runs steam excursions from Bangkok to the ancient capitol of Ayuthia on His Majesty’s birthday in early December.

There are also steam excursions to Kanchanaburi during “Bridge Week” from the end of November to the beginning of December. The bridge week sound and light show commemorates the construction of the notorious Death Railway and the Bridge over the River Kwai during WWII.
