Norfolk and Western 1776, currently at VMT, is in the running for the top ten endangered artifacts, a list that is assembled by the Virginia Association of Museums. You can vote more than once with the way the vote is set up, and there are some other interesting artifacts currently on that list. At last report, the NW 1776 is only 400 votes away from making the list. So, show some support! VMT wants to unveil it on July 4, 2012. Here's the link:

In the usual way for any museum arifact, and especially ones in historical and technical museums. Lack of funding. What I find especially interesting on this list is the number of "technical" artifacts included. Ten or fifteen years ago you wouldn't have seen a locomotive or an aircraft (much less a ship) on a list like this.

As for 1776, she is scheduled to be painted this fall if time permits, and have some missing carbody components replaced. As far as her ever being a "runner" again, there's a lot of stuff missing under the hood.
