It now contains 18,500 steam locomotives; up 500 since the last update in November 2001 and 90% or more of the total worldwide. The database is now thought to be as complete as possible for most of world. The engines listed in previous publications are included, as well as engines recently imported, amusement park engines, homebuilt engines, and replicas. Builders data is also available for roughly 16,000 of the engines in the database. The number of pictures in the database is now up to 625, and includes representative examples of builders and classes the world over. Examples of most surviving classes in North America, the UK, and much of Europe are also now included. Those who have already purchased a copy can order an update. The update includes 200 pictures, many of which do not ship with the program. Updates include an "Update Wizard", which transfers pictures and sound clip links to the update from your current copy before overwriting it. Thus, you needn't worry about losing your picture collection with each update. Both the program and updates can be ordered from the order page at http://www.pernet.net/~james1/us_steam/ordering.htm. It was first released in November, 2001; and has been updated for May, 2002. The two bugs found in the November 2001 release have also been fixed. It also now includes 9655 vehicles from 52 countries, and 280 photographs. No one knows how many steam vehicles remain; my best guess is that this represents 85% of the total worldwide. It will include: Â· Vessels propelled by a steam engine and boiler Â· Vessels propelled by a steam turbine and boiler Â· Vessels propelled by a steam turbine and nuclear reactor The vessels included in the database include working, preserved, and stored examples. Steamboats and steamships which are grounded or derelict in shallow water will be included as well. Vessels which are sunk in deep water will not be included; only those that are visible without diving. To date, 1288 vessels from 55 countries and 70 photographs have been entered into the database, with hundereds more waiting to be entered. It is slated for release in November 2002. If you would like your museum or organization to be represented by a photograph of your vessel, please feel free to send it to me at james1@pernet.net. * New Project: "Steam Lizards" Group on Yahoo * Recently I have recieved quite a bit of favorible comments on my webpage of working reciprocating steam pumps, or "Steam Lizards". They are some of the last of the working steam engines, with hundreds if not thousands still at work in chemical plants, refineries, boilerhouses, and other locations worldwide. To produce a CD-ROM of surviving "steam lizards" would be impossible. Who knows how many are still at work behind security fences at facilities worldwide, not to mention the number in private hands. Steam pumps are still being sold by several pump vendors worldwide. Furthermore, one must take "live steam" pumps (or pumps for live steam equipment) into consideration as well, since the only difference here between "full" and "live steam" is just size. So, I decided to take a different approach. Instead, I have formed a group on Yahoo pertaining to reciprocating steam pumps, or "steam lizards". It is located at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/steam_lizards. Membership is free; as a member you have full access to the following: Â· On-line databases, including a database of surviving steam pumps; besides viewing the pumps already in the database, you can add additional surviving pumps. There is also a database listing the capacity of various size reciprocating steam pumps. Â· A photo section, which includes photographs of surviving steam pumps, historical pump pictures, and pictures of live-steam size pumps. Â· A files section, which will include documents to help with steam pump installation and adjusting. Â· A mailing list; you can elect to receive via e-mail individual messages, digests, or updates. Â· An online calendar of events pertaining to steam pumps. Â· A bookmark list of steam pump-related links on the Internet. News of steam pumps for sale or donation to non-profit organizations can/will also be shared through the mailing list. I myself will hopefully be anouncing the availability of some steam pumps in the near future. Thanks to Jesse Livingston and others for their help and inspiration in starting this project.
