Signifigant because they were the last order of locomotives Ordered for the PRR, and the most powerful Diesel they were allocated, Were there any plans to get one preserved?

If there is no project, I think we could have a good chance for a first try at preserving one, seeing that this fourm is all about preservation. While the first generation of Diesels,
both SD and GP, EMD made have fared well in collections, second generation GP units seem to fare better off than the SD units.

All long gone-some were traded in and some perished within the jaws of IGOR at the now-defunct Hollidaysburg car shop.

While the SD45's might have been the last locomotives delivered to the PRR, the U33C's and C636's were the last ordered, although they were delivered in PC paint. (Penn Central also received a few SD40's early on, which might have been ordered by the P Co.) Any PRR SD45's remaining under Conrail were probably sold to the C&NW, as shown in Don Strack's C&NW diesel roster: http://utahrails.net/cnw/cnw09.php

They were all disposed of 15-25 years ago, but there's probably a chance that one or two hulks might survive at NRE or VMV.

IRM has an SD45 (CN/WC, ex-BN), an FP45 (ATSF), an SD40-2 (UP, ex-C&NW) and a U30C (BN) as examples of 2nd gen C-C's. Operational except the FP45.

Among the 1st gen collection are the very first SD of all and the very first GP as well.

http://gold.mylargescale.com/scottychaos/newyorkcentral/ lists all surviving NYC,PRR,and PC locomotives as of 2006. Although certanly some locomtives on here have been scrapped, there are many promising engines including the As of now stored UP SD40M-2's and HLCX leasers.

Ah, I've seen that list before. Maybe some of the Helm units survive today. I wonder if they still have their 20-645's?

From what I can find, ALL MRL units except for 765 are gone, The HLCX units might still be around, but in storage, and most of the UP sd40m-2s are in storage.

The following Helm leasers are stored at Wood River, Illinois. Most, if not all, have been rebuilt as SD40-2s (i.e. no longer 20-645 prime movers);

HLCX 9023 >> PRR 6223
HLCX 9024 >> PRR 6180
HLCX 9027 >> PRR 6182
HLCX 9028 >> PRR 6194
HLCX 9029 >> PRR 6190
HLCX 9030 >> PRR 6172
HLCX 9032 >> PRR 6189
HLCX 9034 >> PRR 6176
HLCX 9035 >> PRR 6222
HLCX 9036 >> PRR 6227

All of these units are owned by the Royal Bank of Scotland.

The aforementioned ex-UP/SP SD40m-2s are stored in Sterling, Illinois and are owned by Citibank.

Looks like the final unrebuilt SD45 with its 20 cylinder engine is MRL 765. Sold to
NWIX and kept it's number.
In addition I found on PC SD45 that still exists that never worked for the PRR.
TRMW 3001 has been rebuilt with a 645-16 motor.

Looks like it will be hard to get it from citibank and the royal bank of scotland, so these two seem like the only ones with a chance of being donated.

Assuming the bank has no need for them, I would assume a good cash offer would pry them loose. Raise some funds and make a call.

Raising a good $50,000 dollars in this economy isn't viable, especially since a High School student can't really direct something like this. I'd say ask if a donation would be in order for them and if not ask if they can give it for a cheaper price.

I think that it may be our only chance to ask whoever owns the NWIX locomotive or the
TRMW owners what they would think of donating it when their service is over.

$50,000 for an SD45? That's pretty optimistic, since GP38's and the like are going for upwards of $200,000 and an SD40-2 can be had for about $165k. You might be able to get a stripped hulk with no engine, alternator, or traction motors for $50k, but not a complete unit.

If I may ask, what do you mean?

I'd rather NOT hold off on attempting to preserve a type of locomotive with numbers dwindling fast. It may not be easy, but THIS SITE IS DEDICATED TO PRESERVING LOCOMOTIVES. If each member on the site donated just $10 to a project such as this, we would have a good offer for anything with a price range less than $500k.

RYPN has people with contacts to everywhere imaginable that can help with preservation and we have the resources to do it.

There have been a number of posts on here where folks have ideas about doing something just like you suggest, but without any realistic plans for things like funding, long term storage, etc... let alone the resources to even get started (by creating an entity to engage in the activity, like enough people for a board of directors).

Perhaps I'm being a bit harsh, it's just that, like many have said, RYPN is not a "dream board", where ideas about "wouldn't it be nice if so and so did such and such" gets recycled ad nauseum.
