On the New Haven/Penn Central, the train was known as the "Flying Blue Beer Can".

Aside from the BART style front ends, was there anything unusual about these? Thought they were pretty standard subway trains running on a cool route?

Boy, I do wish that the TurboTrains had survived! I rode one on the Northeast Corridor, and wow, what a ride... It's the fastest I've ever gone on steel rails, and riding in the little "dome car" behind the engineer was like getting a cab ride. It was a bit disconcerting though, since the clearances were pretty tight. Combined with the speed, it made for a convincing optical illusion. Even been on a roller coaster and felt you needed to duck when it went under a certain section? Yeah, well, I ducked at several underpasses along the route, even though I knew the train obviously must have fit through there hundreds of times before. ;)

I rode the Amtrak TurboTrain from Harper's Ferry to Silver Spring, MD after it had been relegated to service on the Washington - Parkersburg run (aka "Staggers Express"). The dome car was a new experience in addition to the excitement of the "high speed" ride.
