Hello Everyone, I'm working on an HO scale model of a Nickel Plate Road GP-30 for my railroad collection. I want to have it painted in the N&W and NKP merger scheme of the late 60's early 70's. I have three questions. The first is, what NKP GP-30's stayed on the N&W roster after the merger? The second, which units would've operated in the Roanoke, VA area? And last, how many of those units were preserved or are still in use today? Not exactly a preservation question, but I was just interested as I want to make an historically accurate presentation of this type of diesel for my (someday) layout. Thanks in advance. Martin |

Since the NKP GP30's didn't have dynamic brakes, they probably would have stayed on the flatter ex-Wabash and NKP parts of the railroad in the Midwest, rather than working out of Roanoke. They occasionally ran off-line on the Lehigh Valley and Western Maryland. Today at least the 900 (Mad River & Nickel Plate Museum) and 901 (http://lebanonrr.com/nkp901.html) exist. Walt L. |
