Today brought my wife, our retriever Aurora, and me to Roundhouse Park in Toronto. This is, perhaps, the most amazing railroad green space I've ever seen. In the shadow of the CN Tower, and old roundhouse complex has been converted to an island of preservation, coupled to a museum, a live steam layout, and a beer brewery. The historic locomotives include a CPR Baldwin Diesel, a CN GP9, some passenger heavyweights, and the star of the park, 4-8-4, CNR 6213. The turntable bridge and pit are restored and cleaned up. The coal tipple is modified to shelter the Baldwin switcher and the Geep. The big Northern is beautifully kept, fully greased, painted, and without a speck of rust to be seen. She smells of lubricant and only lacks a wisp of steam to complete the perfect picture.

She smells of lubricant and is in pristine condition because a friend of mine, Grant Kingsland, has kept it that way for years! Not only has he kept it looking cosmetically good, but he has kept everything greased and most of the appliances on it can still work on air. 6213 would be a great candidate for operational restoration some day.

Of course, now that she is finally part of a museum that CAN store her indoors, there are of course NO plans to store her indoors...

I checked out the sight on Google Earth and am surpised that I could not find a connecting rail to the main yard. Is there one?

JD Johnson, Morehead and North Fork Railroad Historain

No direct track link, but the roundhouse radials are in place for displaying equipment, and one can feed directly onto a flatbed vehicle if warranted. Expect to see more equipment moving into the site in the future. Hopefully, when the Canadian National centenniary rolls around, somebody will wake up and smell the coffee!

Part of the problem with more equipment is that there is no where to store it. Equipment that has been stored inside for 20 years is now outside fulltime, and any equipment that gets stored under the coaling tower gets covered in pigeon droppings and whatever leaches out of the concrete of the coaling tower. There are also security concerns as their really isn't any. Apparently people have been living inside the equipment. There are Also problems with vandalism.

The museum itself only consists of three stalls. The brewery and furniture store occupy the rest. After all the work that went into getting 6213 to the roundhouse, I'm dissapointed that she will probably not reside inside the actual building anytime soon.

Also, we can't really work on her outside, we would like to get her over a pit to finish some of the jobs that still need to be done as a result of the move several years ago.

Even trucking equipment in can be a problem, but not impossible obviously because 6213 was trucked there a couple of years ago. There is a parking garage underneath a large portion of the property now which kind of limits where you can unload some equipment.

There are also limits to where equipment can be displayed, for example 6213 can only be displayed on certain tracks (the ones underneath the coal plant).
