seems there has been lurking rumors but I just found out now scrounging around, might be old news for you.

Sounds like good news but note its a one of a kind engine in existance.
But there are other one of a kind engines out there in operation.

Sounds like a good selection for an engine.

...edit...

title changed, but kept intact even because of the rumors (thats the way it goes!)

I'll wait and see. It seems a little odd that if they are devoting their time, money and energy to 261's overhaul that they would go outside.
Is 3001 a roller bearing engine? From the photo it looks like their trailing truck is.

as per the links, a group of private businessmen are doing it, the Elkhart museum just confirmed to me it is contracted for restoration, the 261 grooup may not be directly involved, but it seems it may be headed to 261's territory if not moved where 261 is for restoration, another engine whatever condition may take the spot 3001 is at.

Definately watch and stay updated situation.

With no official word on any official website I am in the Doubting Thomas mode.

In reply to Frisco 1522, she is roller bearing equipped on all axles. Part of an order back about 1940 or so. A sister engine from this group, I think it was the 3005, was the principle subject matter, along with her engineer, in the classic David P. Morgan account of late steam, "The Mohawk That Refused To Abdicate." At least one other poster on this forum suggested this machine would be a good running mate with C&O 614 for the proposed Greenbrier Express service; I am inclined to agree, thanks to those roller bearings and things like horsepower curves.

Unfortunately, as we know, steam is out for the Greenbrier Express due to the CSX policy, which leads up to an interesting question--who is paying for the rebuilding of this machine, and where do they plan to run it? It's not small; it's a modern high-horsepower engine, in many ways a counterpart to a Nickel Plate 2-8-4. I don't imagine there are too many places to use it.

I'm a big steam fan, and I do wish the group well, but like Tom Gears, I'll be in Doubting Thomas mode for the time being.

From the top of the Wikipedia article on #3001: "This article does not cite any references or sources."

Great news if it's true though!

They may not want to attract attention yet when circumstances are not ready, it would probably take some prepping the engine before moving anyways, and if it moves it would generate plenty of news anyways.

You couldnt move 767 (765) without blocking a street and crossing a main thruway
and have a major visual suddenly dissappear without people noticing.

I will ask some folks I know sometime.

Well what a coincidence! I was just at the museum earlier today on my way back from St. Paul, MN. While there some young kid kept talking to his dad about " I wanna be there to see them take it out". When its running again you gotta take me for a ride". I was wondering what he was rambling on about!

Restoring this locomotive to operation is a wonderful idea, as she is not getting enough attention where she is sitting at now. I only hope that when she returns to the museum someday there is a new enginehouse for her to live in. I just can't stand seeing locomotives sitting out in the weather!

Thank you for posting the locomotive photos. I missed this one on the way west. Glad to see her looking, well, not bad. Running one of the last NYC big steamers would be a coup, and draw a great number of interested parties to the project. Like reviving the C&O Greenbriar, it would be another restoration milestone.

"Doubting Thomas"? You mean, like that empty tank loco at OERM?*

Sorry to burst the Mohawk bubble, guys, but after reading this thread I called a friend with connections to the 261 group, and he had just happened to talk to Steve Sandberg today about the 3001. He said Steve had a good laugh. As far as the part about the 261 group being involved, that is B.S.

Again, sorry!

If this is true, looks like the Frisco 1522 won't be the only 4-8-2 in operating condition!

If it isn't, oh well, it was a nice idea.

Just so you guys know this, the 3001 is only somewhat one of a kind. The NYC 2933 is also a Mowhawk, but might be a different class, I'm not exactly sure.

If this is true (and it probably isn't, "sigh"...), there are fans who will come back from "beyond" to see it.

And, 3001 has documented service in New England on the Boston & Albany!

And if the story isn't true maybe 3001 should be on to the list of steam locomotives that are going to be built as new replicas and then there would be two of them!

After all, we have so many discussions here about building new locomotives......
