I also follow a weblog on the proposed California high speed rail service. Most of that discussion is about the new railroad, but sometimes historical perspectives and discussions of local connecting transit turn up. This came up with a post about what BART was anticipated to look like ca. 1960, and in response came some material on other plans that went further back.

That weblog mentions another, whose owner goes by the name of "Burrito Justice." (I'm not making that up! I couldn't make that up!) Anyway, Mr. BJ has an interest in history, too, and that includes this page with color versions of some of the illustrations used to promote BART prior to construction.

There was also mention of a slightly earlier story with photos of BART under construction:

Here's the earlier material, courtesy of a collection maintained and shared by Eric Fischer:

Enjoy this look through an old crystal ball. . . .

Oh, from the California high speed discussion site, comes this comment by a John Burrows, referring to the idea that a place called Royal Donuts would have been demolished for a proposed but never built BART line:

"Royal Donuts lives on!!!

"During the 20 years I lived in Burlingame, customers must have thought that my office was at Royal Donuts. Now with the blended plan it looks like the place will survive High Speed Rail as well, at least for the time being."

Hey, with all the comments we sometimes get about food around here. . .
