First picture courtesy of Don Janes shows some of the repairs undertaken this year.. Second photo shows that Bullet nose Betty 6069 has had her nose removed for repair and restoration. She really looks different without it...

Is this the locomotive whose sheet metal was tarred to prevent asbestos leakage? Nevertheless, it's welcomed to see her getting attention. Looks like some heavy work being accomplished. |

She looks different without that nose cone... And the orange primer is something different... Actually, she looks fairly sharp without the nosecone and the orange coloring. Any chance she'll get some new paint with orange accenting? ;-) On a serious note, very impressive. Of the handful of parked steamers I've seen since 2007 (first time I saw a steam engine was at Mt. Washington Cog Railway), 6069 looks better than the others, including the B&M 1455 at Danbury and Southern Sand and Gravel at the Steaming Tender in palmer (while you can't find rust, there is definitly parts that show damage from the weather, like the bottom of the cab with rusted metal work from her time at the Hubbardston Flea Market, and the wooden lining inside the cab and tender coal bunker showing their age, but still intact). I can't speak for the CP G5 at RMNE or the Sumpter and Chocktaw 103, as I only got a passing glance during my visit. Keep up the good work! |

Thanks for the comments! Yes the primer (brighter colored one) is an anti corrosion primer and will soon be covered over in several coats of the green paint. Richard, The belly of the locomotive was coated in an elastomeric coating not tar. This was done to prevent weak areas on the belly from leaking asbestos. We are looking at having a similiar coating applied to the top of the jacket as well but thinner coating and a new jacket installed. We are working hard at keeping the water out of and away from the boiler as much as we can. |

Fall update for 2012... Alot of effort has gone in to restoration on the engineer's side of the tender with it being stripped to bare steel primed and repainted. We have also had the complete upper boiler jacket sealed to prevent water ingress with being outside 365 days a year. Both it the firebox sides and front cylinder jackets have been sprayed with a rubber sealant gloss black with a clear gloss top coat. Once this side of the tender is completed then attention will turn to the fireman's side.

A number of these U-1-f 4-8-2s had their bullet noses removed while still in operation for CNR, I think all or mostly in the western provinces. I have seen photos and videos of them running that way. |

Yes. 6060 was one of those. Fortunately 6069 and 6077 kept their nose cones. |

Nice work! I do like the green! Is there a website that lists and goes into detail about the preserved CN steam engines? CP 1246 has seen some cosmetic and minor repairs done the past year. Nothing to make it run but just to improve it's looks and help preserve it until it's day in the sun hopefully comes around again. The work is being done by an individual member who "adopted" this engine and does work and repairs to it during his free time. Similar to what I have been doing to another locomotive stored at RMNE, out of my own pocket, helping to guarantee it a resurrection to active service someday in the future. It's a hobby to some of us, saving and fixing something we like........and as selfish as it sounds, if it wasn't for this particular loco I would never have shown up at RMNE's doorstep a few years ago. While I spend most of my time doing other stuff there I am able to get some work on it done each month. |
