After Hatch died in 1988, they were sold to Fred Kepner of Oregon. > #36 2-8-2 Out of service and stored at Merril (spelling?) Oregon along with Santa Maria Valley 2-8-2 No. 100. Last operated in 1983 on the Heber Creeper at which time it was pulled from service for running gear and spring rigging work. Many parts are missing because No. 36 was in the shop at Heber undergoing a major running gear overhaul when it was sold to Fred Kepner in 1988, who moved it to Ogden for storage and lost many parts in the prosess. > #30 2-6-2 Still at the Niles Canyon Railway in California. The one they are using is the original from Santa Maria Valley No. 100 (100 has a small home-built vandy from its days on the SMV) Jeff Jeff jterry618@msn.com |

> In response to Alan's question about the Sierra #30, plans are to restore the #30 (Howard Terminal #6 from 1937 to 1962) with a tender in its 1930's Sierra Ry. appearance. Unfortunately, we have put this project on the back burner as the mechanical dept. is extremely busy working on the Quincy RR #2 (just returned to service May 19) and the Robert Dollar Lumber Co. #3. Our hand was forced on the #2, and the #3 has turned out to be a bigger project than originally planned but progress is being made. Now that the #2 is running again, we will be focusing on finishing the #3. As for the #30, the Santa Maria tender was traded around 1998 to George Lavacot for use on his ex-Santa Maria 2-6-2 in exchange for an ex-Rayonier tender which is closer to the prototype (looking at the photographs in the Rayonier book, I believe it is the tender off the #101). The locomotive is currently disassembled but before restoration the boiler needs firebox work, the suspension and running gear are wore out and the tender needs major repairs also. I guess you can read into this as NEEDS MONEY like every other steam locomotive restoration. Before the other two mentioned projects came along, the drivers were turned, axles trued up along and some of the spring rigging has been rebored and new bushings installed. I look forward to the day the locomotive is operating, but because in addition to a major overhaul, we are also backdating her from a tank engine to a tender engine this is an extremely long term project.
