CARVER — As dusk settles over the cranberry bogs, a rickety train departs from the station. Thousands of colored lights are glowing. The whistle blows, and the train begins its loop around Edaville USA amusement park. On an open-air train car, two young girls, sisters, are bundled in winter jackets, squeezed between their parents. Their voices fill with amazement at each light display along the route.

“Whoa,” they say as the train passes the colorful outline of a dinosaur. “Whoa,” as they travel through a miniature Christmas village.

The train ride is the highlight of the Edaville visit.

That is especially true around the holidays with the park’s annual Christmas Festival of Lights, said Suzanne Byron, spokeswoman for the park. The festival runs through January 1.

“We’re in the business here of making memories,” Byron said.

Lynne Xerras of Newton was visiting the park Sunday evening with husband Dean and children Maddie, 9, Charlotte, 7, and Luke, 3.

“I remember coming here as a kid. It’s fun to be bringing my kids,” she said.

Xerras had heard that Edaville might close this year, so she said she’s glad it is still around.

Byron said park owner Jon Delli backed out of selling the park last year at the last moment when he found out the buyer would not use the property for operating the park.

Instead, Delli has reinvested in the park, putting in new rides and plans to open it more during the summer, Byron said.

Edaville, which opened in 1947, will be around for at least another five years, she said.

That’s was a relieve to Jeff Maxwell, who used to come to Edaville during the holidays as a child and now brings his own children.

Maxwell and his wife Melissa, of Clinton, brought their sons Nolan, 4, and Garrett, 2, Sunday night. They came with Nolan’s and Garrett’s grandparents, who live in Norton.

“Their grandparents wanted to give an experiential gift rather than toys they’d only play with for a year,” said Melissa Maxwell, the boys’ mother.

For Nolan and Garrett, the train ride was the best part of Sunday night’s visit to the park.

“He kept saying, ‘Daddy, look at the lights!’” Jeff Maxwell said of son Garrett
