Would anybody who has moved a 100 ton deck girder turntable bridge have the weight, as measured by the cranes' scales? Please mention whether this is with the deck intact, or removed.

We are looking at moving a 100' table and will be obtaining a rough weight using air jacks, but it would be nice to have the weight of other tables to verify the results.

I don't want to say much yet, but as things develop will fill in the details.

Not at all, Kelly, we are getting crane quotes and without a ballpark weight we don't know whether a pair of 160 ton cranes will be enough at the required lift radius, or 300 ton cranes will be required. That alone makes a big difference in the cost, particularly since the second 300 ton crane would come from 150 miles away, rather than 50.

As well, this will determine the number of wheels required for the road move.

If we can draw from the experience of others who have moved turntable bridges- and there seem to be a number of groups who have done this represented on the forum- it will greatly simplify obtaining quotes.

Sorry to be "mysterious", but there are still many loose ends to be wrapped up before any announcements can be made.

There are structural steel books around that will give the weight per foot of any structural steel shape. You'll need to do some measuring and calculating for the beams plus all the cross members, etc. I doubt that you need two 300 ton cranes unless you have a very long reach.

Did you try contacting the Toronto Railway Historical Association? The John Street roundhouse turntable was rebuilt 5 or 6 years ago. It was moved to I think Barrie, then moved back once completed. Either they or the company that moved the table might be able to tell you what the weight was.

We moved an 86' through truss turntable and it weighted 120,000 lbs. We used a 200 ton crane to lift it off the trailer.

Long ago and far away a previous employeer owned a 125 foot deck girder turntable. It was moved entirely stipped: no deck, no centerbearing, and no castors. By my foggy recollection the house movers said it weighted 90 tons from the pressures in the hydraulic system.

As previously advised get out the tape measure, calculator and handbook. It also wouldn't hurt to keep the numbers and check your capasity. A number that may come it handy when you least expect it.

At this stage we're just looking for very rough figures, and will be careful to err on the high side.

Agreed, calculations based on volume and density are the most accurate way to obtain a rough weight. I work in engineering and am very comfortable with this process, but the level of access and time on the property required to take enough measurements to make meaningful calculations is simply not available at this point.

Rest assured, as final arrangements are made, this will be done!

Yes, that is the CN, (nee Grand Trunk), turntable from Fort Erie, Ontario. It moved to Long Island in 2001 from the Arcade & Attica Railroad.
