Post subject:  air pump exhaust

Where does the exhaust of the air pump go to?

Ive never seen a pump exhaust steam around it, so I assumed it was blasted up the stack, but Ive never seen an outlet in the smoke box for this.

On many locomotives it is piped into the exhaust cavity in the saddle and exhausts out the stack with the cylinder exhaust. Some air pumps exhaust out a pipe into the atmosphere, generally running alongside the stack - look at the Georgetown Loop shays for an example.

some engines with worthington feedwater heaters have the exhaust piped into the heater box. I don't know about other types of heaters. Many smaller engines, as was noted, just exhaust up the stack. That is why the pump noise is so prominant while the engine is standing.

Don't forget the later classes of Espee's ACs' (cab-forwards)where the pumps mounted on the smokebox door exhausted via a short pipe directly into the atmosphere giving them their unique chant.

Some of the "direct vented" air pump exhaust set ups were outfitted with mufflers on the exhaust line(s) to quiet things down. Two cross-compound compressors hammering away while pumping up the trainline can make quite a racket!

Also some turbo-generators have mufflers on their exhausts to deaden the whine.

Deaden the whine of a turbo-generator? That's sacrilage.

When TVRM first restored Southern Wood Preserving #3, an air pump was installed for the first time(it had steam brakes and never had had an automatic air brake). The exhaust was piped into the stack. I will never forget the sound of that locomotive whenever the air pump started to operate. POW POW POW POW! It was so much louder than the faint exhaust from the cylinders, especially in the tunnel!

The SWP #3 is now rusting in peace at the Ohio Central. I do plan to pay my respects (and lay a wreath on her pilot) when I'm up there next weekend.

Obviously, you never had to listen to one sitting right in front of the cab ALLLL DAY and part of the night LONG! Stuff like that sounds neat until you've been around it for a while, then you develop the same loving disdain for it that our predecessors of the steam fraternity had (the ones who operated it daily). Don't get me wrong, it sounds a hell of lot better than those GE Dash whatevers that I listen to on a daily basis.

Come to think of it, the fact that they sound so poorly as compared to the sounds of steam is why they now have whisper cabs on dismals.... I just don't see a comfort cab on, say, the A or J.....
