Brooklyn Eastern District Terminal 0-6-0T No. 13 has been acquired for the collection of the Age of Steam Roundhouse now under construction at Sugarcreek, Ohio. The locomotive, which had been at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania in Strasburg, was deemed surplus and made available to organizations that could provide a secure home for it. No. 13, along with two former Department of Defense flatcars, traveled by truck from Pennsylvania to Ohio.

I wonder if it was sold or if it was a donation. I think Age of Steam is now a non-profit? I don't remember seeing anything about RRMPA wanting to dispose of anything.

This is a classic Porter side tanker, sister #12 is in Florida. I would assume that if Jacobsen wants it, he must be interested in running it! More wonderful news for the holiday season.

Well does not suprise me he is on the hunt. He has 14 locomotives now and 18 stalls. So if I had to make a guess there might be 4 more purchases to fill up the round house.

I wonder if he would save some of the stalls for the diesels he has. I know he has an RS-3 (originally a Long Island unit) and a dozen or so switchers. He might be able to fit a pair of switchers on a stall track.

Jerry and his crew have a lot of hungry mouths to feed now...(referring to the steam engines)

Oi. Not a Trains Mag subscriber. What does the article say?

Jerry's going to need a small army to operate/maintain/restore these locomotives...

http://www.trainweb.org/bedt/bedt/BEDT13.html is a great link to view pictures of #13 in operation...

How did this take so long to hit the Intrawebs? Did the message come via horse and buggy?

Nice! Better than sitting around rusting. I'll take a surviving BEDT 'tanker anyway I can get 'em.

Here are a couple snapshots I took with a little Brownie camera, back in 1959, when a couple friends and I visited the BEDT Main Yard:

An interesting concept would be for the roundhouse to acquire a number of these small, truckable locomotives, put them in running condition at the roundhouse, then lease them to tourist/museum roads who could support them in regular operations for a number of years at a time with the locomotives returning to the roundhouse for major repairs/1472 day inspections as needed.

This would centralize the heavy work where specialized equipment is available, provide a regular parade of locomotives for skilled workers, and new workers to be trained, all the while putting steam in front of a much larger audience then we have today.

In a decade, one could image the roundhouse working on one or two of these locomotives a year, with another five or ten out working in the field, hauling trains.

Tom:

A la Glueck, RRMPA has been carefully deaccessioning items not pertaining to the core collection for years. For a definition of the "core collection" you'll have to contact our colleagues at the RRMPA.
