The k582 is the queen of "you must remove something else first". Among examples, the trainline steam in the cab has developed a crack from vibrating against the fireman's injector. The trainline steam snakes down from the turret UNDER the blower valve rod. The blower valve itself is up front at the smokebox, and controlled by a continuous shaft running through the handrail to the cab, ending in the handwheel. Of course there is a further support stanchion after the trainline steam, that is threaded into the boiler shell. So to remove the trainline steam pipe we have to remove the blower valve and slide the valve shaft forward.

Another example is here. We need to replace some rusted components in the smokebox netting, around the petticoat pipe, which are bolted with nuts through the smokebox shell. The k582 has a cosmetic smokestack over the actual smokestack. Of course, the cosmetic stack covers the necessary nuts and bolts. So we needed to lift the cosmetic stack.

Pictured below is our successful stack lift. You don't want to see the unsuccessful one. We put a chain hoist on the roof truss, pry barred the engine into position, and lifted the stack cover with a wooded beam drilled to match lifting points in the stack. Watch your fingers!

p.s. our workshop is an original running locomotive service facility from the 1897 opening of the coastal railway. Inside the shop, we have our original locomotive water tank and spouts.

Heh, the engines I work on follow "The Rule of Two," in that whenever there are two of a given component, you can spend untold hours fighting with and swearing at the first one, yet, once you admit defeat and decide to try the second one, right quick before packing up for the day, it can't come apart fast enough... It has happened so many times that we can predict that outcome with astounding accuracy...
