I am trying to get the attention of the MBTA about the F40's they plan to retire. Does anyone here have any good contacts? Does anyone here have experience on how to approach state owned commuter railroads about acquiring equipment? I could really use the help.

Mr. Cook can probably help you with that.

The Seashore Trolley Museum has worked closely with the MBTA, so try asking one of those guys (Danny, Roger, Jim, etc).

The MBTA is legally obligated to recover as much value as possible from any retired equipment designated for disposal. Consequently you can be pretty sure than any locomotives that get retired will be advertised for bids, and to obtain one you will have to compete with other bidders. To be advised of material that is advertised for bids you can watch the business section of their website or you could write to their Materials Management Department and ask if they maintain a notification list.

Their correct mailing address is immediately accessible by typing in "MBTA address" in Google search, it is the first address in the first listing that comes up in search.

Information on obtaining bidding forms is available in the Business Center portion of their website, and this also provides the specific address for the MMO:

So why doesn't this apply to CDot who has donated numerous pieces of equipment to museums like the various FL9s they had?

Why don't you contact CDot and ask them?

I believe NJT also had some kind of an arrangement at one time that allowed them to make equipment available for preservation. Maybe they still do.

From what I have been told, MBTA does not. I think the ex-MBTA equipment that is around bears that out. As far as I know their retired equipment now owned by others was purchased by bidding on it. If someone else on the discussion knows of instances where they gave stuff away, maybe they will let us know. I have not seen it happen.

Having lived in both NY & NJ, I would say that 'political considerations' sometimes trump (and have, in the past) any agency rules as to donations of equipment or other material.

Can't offer any comment about CDOT, though.
